Doug sat at his desk and picked up his phone. He exhaled heavily as he heard the phone ringing. It was answered by a breathless Eve.

‘Hello?’

Doug paused for a second. ‘Eve. It’s Doug from the lifeboat.’

He closed his eyes as he heard her shaky intake of breath.

‘Oh God. Oh God. Have you found him? Is he…?’

‘Eve. Listen. We found him. He’s hypothermic. We weren’t sure if he was alive when we found him. He had a really faint pulse, but we have no real idea of how long he’s been in that state.’

Eve’s voice shook. ‘Where is he now?’

‘He’s at the hospital. It’s going to be a long road if he pulls through it, but as I said, he was in a bad way.’

Eve was silent for a moment. ‘Thank you. For letting me know and for finding him. We’ll go to the hospital now.’

‘Let me know how he is, yes?’

‘OK.’

‘Take care now, Eve, regards to the wee man.’

‘Thanks, Doug. For everything you did. All of you. Bye.’

Doug replaced the receiver and rubbed his face. He hoped to God that the guy was going to pull through.
